The Iowa communities of Audubon, Hamlin, Brayton, and Slater continue to remember and honor the life of Travis Lee Petersen, a beloved son, brother, father, and friend whose passing left a profound void in the hearts of those who knew him. Travis passed away on August 13, 2022, at the age of 37, leaving behind a legacy of friendship, devotion to family, and countless cherished memories.
Born on April 7, 1985, in Atlantic, Iowa, Travis grew up surrounded by the strong values of family, hard work, and community. He attended Audubon High School, graduating in 2003, before continuing his education at the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC). Following his studies, he settled in the Slater area, where he built a life centered on family, friendships, and the activities he loved most.
Those who knew Travis often described him as someone who could light up a room with his personality. Outgoing, friendly, and genuinely caring, he possessed a rare ability to make everyone feel welcome. Friends frequently remarked that Travis never met a stranger. Whether he was sharing a laugh, helping someone in need, or simply enjoying time with those around him, he left a positive impression wherever he went. His sense of humor and easygoing nature made him a favorite among family members, coworkers, and lifelong friends alike.
Travis had a passion for the outdoors and adventure. He enjoyed snowmobiling, riding ATVs, and spending time with friends exploring the countryside. He was also a devoted supporter of Iowa State athletics, enthusiastically following his favorite teams and celebrating game days with family and fellow fans. These hobbies provided him with opportunities to create lasting friendships and unforgettable experiences throughout his life.
Above all else, Travis was devoted to his children, Brooks and Baylor. Family members say that being a father was his greatest joy and proudest accomplishment. He treasured every moment spent with his children and worked hard to provide them with love, guidance, and support. His role as a father defined much of his life, and the bond he shared with his children was evident to everyone who knew him.
Travis is survived by his children, Brooks and Baylor; his parents, Kent and Carol Baier; his girlfriend, Lauren Becker; his sisters, Melissa Thygesen and Tiffany Steensen; his brother, Tyson Petersen; his grandmother, Bonnie Petersen; his great-grandfather, Charles Griffith; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends. His passing reunited him with loved ones who preceded him in death, including his grandparents, Russell Petersen, Fred and Elaine Baier, his great-grandmother Jean Griffith, and his sister-in-law, Karmen Grabill.
Following his death, tributes poured in from across Iowa and beyond. Friends shared stories of his kindness, loyalty, and ability to bring people together. Many remembered the laughter he inspired and the genuine care he showed to everyone around him. His family found comfort in the countless messages and memories that highlighted the positive impact he made during his 37 years.
Although Travis Lee Petersen’s life ended far too soon, his memory continues to live on through his children, family, and the many people fortunate enough to have known him. He is remembered not only as a beloved brother and son but also as a devoted father, loyal friend, and remarkable individual whose warmth and generosity will never be forgotten.
