Born on October 29, 1993, in Audubon, Iowa, Karmen was the beloved daughter of Troy and DeEtte Grabill. She spent her early childhood on the family farm near Fiscus before moving to Manning during elementary school. From an early age, she demonstrated a remarkable work ethic, adventurous spirit, and natural ability to connect with others. Those qualities would continue to define her throughout her life.
Karmen graduated from IKM-Manning High School in 2012 and later attended Iowa Western Community College, where she earned an Associate Degree as a Veterinary Technician. Her love for animals and the outdoors reflected her practical nature and deep appreciation for rural life. Whether caring for animals, helping on the farm, or spending time with loved ones, Karmen approached everything with enthusiasm and determination.
Following her education, Karmen worked with Petersen Harvesting, where she earned admiration for her skill and versatility. Friends and colleagues recalled that she could operate nearly any piece of equipment and confidently handle the demanding work associated with large-scale harvesting operations. Her travels across the southern and western United States introduced her to countless people who were drawn to her friendly personality, bright smile, and willingness to lend a helping hand.
Outside of work, Karmen was actively involved in numerous youth and community organizations throughout her life. She participated in 4-H, FFA, Saddle Club activities, and played tenor saxophone in the school band. She loved horseback riding, especially competing in barrel racing and pole events with her horse, Juno. Her adventurous spirit, combined with her natural talent, made her stand out in everything she pursued.
Above all else, Karmen treasured her family. She shared a deep bond with her parents, siblings, grandparents, and extended relatives. She was especially devoted to her fiancé, Tyson Petersen, and their daughters, Kylie and Whitney. Family members described her as someone who brought light and laughter wherever she went. Her love for those closest to her was evident in every aspect of her life, and her greatest joy came from spending time with the people she cherished most.
