Firefighters across San Diego County responded to multiple vegetation fires that sparked concern among residents on Monday, including a wildfire in the Sorrento Valley area and a separate fire reported in Oceanside. Emergency crews, air support units, and law enforcement agencies worked throughout the day to contain the flames and protect nearby communities.
The most significant incident was the Sorrento Fire, which broke out near Sorrento Valley Boulevard and Ocean Air Drive in northern San Diego. The wildfire quickly spread through steep, brush-covered terrain, prompting a large-scale response from the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department and assisting agencies. Fire officials reported that challenging topography and dry vegetation allowed the blaze to expand rapidly during the morning hours.
As the fire grew, evacuation orders and warnings were issued for several nearby neighborhoods. Authorities urged residents in affected zones to leave immediately while emergency crews worked to establish containment lines. A temporary evacuation point was established in the University City area to assist displaced residents.
Aerial firefighting resources played a critical role in slowing the fire’s advance. Helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft conducted repeated water and retardant drops over the affected hillsides, helping ground crews gain control of the incident. According to officials, the fire initially expanded from approximately 45 acres to more than 60 acres before eventually reaching around 90 acres. By late afternoon, firefighters had halted the forward spread of the fire and achieved approximately 20% containment.
The wildfire threatened structures, transmission lines, and transportation corridors in the Sorrento Valley region. Road closures were implemented along portions of Sorrento Valley Boulevard to provide safe access for firefighting operations and to keep the public away from hazardous conditions. Smoke from the blaze was visible across several parts of San Diego, prompting air-quality concerns for nearby residents.
At the same time, firefighters in Oceanside responded to what local residents referred to as the Airport Fire, located near the Oceanside Municipal Airport area. Community reports indicated that smoke was visible throughout portions of Oceanside, and evacuation measures were briefly implemented before conditions improved. Officials later downgraded some evacuation orders as firefighters gained control of the situation.
Authorities have not yet announced an official cause for the Sorrento Fire, and the incident remains under investigation. Fire officials continue to monitor hot spots and strengthen containment lines to prevent flare-ups, particularly as Southern California enters a period of heightened wildfire risk. Residents are encouraged to remain alert, follow evacuation instructions when issued, and monitor official updates from local emergency management agencies.
The rapid response by firefighters, supported by aircraft and law enforcement personnel, helped prevent more extensive damage despite the challenging terrain and fire conditions. Crews are expected to remain in the affected areas until the fire is fully contained and any remaining threats have been eliminated.
